SKI SLOPESTYLE: Annabel Blake has suffered a season-ending knee injury at the Ski Slopestyle World Cup in the USA last week.

Competing in the discipline which will make its debut at the Sochi Games, Blake caught her left outside edge coming out of the first down rail.

The dream of competing at the Winter Olympics in Sochi next month is over for the vivacious 22-year-old, however she is young and strong and staying very positive for her future in the sport beyond the Games.

"Unfortunately I will need surgery so there will be no chance of my making Sochi," she said from her base in Colorado. "It would be wishful thinking, however the gig's not up yet, I'll be back skiing as soon as I possibly can!"

Blake, who has a contagious energy and beaming smile, is very popular among the Australian and international freeskiing and snowboarding community, and will be missed on the World Cup circuit when she leaves to return home for surgery.

"No reason to be too devastated - at least it's summer back home,” she said. “And I am convincing mum to get me a puppy so it's not all bad!"

Blake's mum, Janine Shepherd, knows all too well the devastation of missing out on the Olympic dream. An elite cross country skier, Shepherd was hit by a truck during a training bike ride and left a partial paraplegic. Lucky to even survive, Shepherd defied the odds to walk again, have children, become a pilot and is a famous inspirational speaker and motivator.

One of her keenest subjects has been her daughter who has been skiing since she could walk and dreamt of following in her mother's footsteps of making the Olympics.

“Mum has redefined what I thought is possible,” Blake told the AOC in an interview in 2013.

Blake will return to Australia for surgery and will be back skiing as soon as she can, looking towards 2018 and beyond.
