GYMNASTICS: Blake Gaudry has secured Australia a position in the Men’s Individual Trampoline competition at the 2016 Olympic Games, following his performance at the Aquece Rio Test Event in Rio de Janeiro early this morning.
Gaudry scored 48.630 in his set routine followed by 55.915 in his voluntary, for a combined total of 104.545 at the end of the qualification round. Gaudry needed to finish within the top five countries who had not already secured a berth at the Games following last year’s Trampoline Gymnastics World Championships in Odense, Denmark, to qualify the position.
Gymnastics Australia CEO, Mark Rendell, congratulated Gaudry on qualifying Australia an outright quota position for the Games of the XXXI Olympiad.
“We know Blake for his professionalism and composure in the competition arena, on top of the fact that he is already a seasoned athlete having represented Australia at the Olympics in 2012, so we were confident that he would get the job done in securing Australia this position at the Test Event,” Rendell said. “We are now looking forward to an exciting Trampoline competition at the 2016 Australian Gymnastics Championships.”
The selection trial for this position in the Men’s Individual Trampoline event in Rio will be held at the 2016 Australian Gymnastics Championships. The event is sure to be hotly contested with athletes including 2015 World Championship team members Shaun Swadling, Ty Swadling and Jack Penny, 2015 World Double-Mini Trampoline Bronze Medallist, Matthew Weal, and up-and-coming 2015 World Age athlete, Dominic Clarke, all competing alongside Gaudry for the position.
The 2016 Australian Gymnastics Championships will be held at Melbourne’s Hisense Arena from May 23 to June 4.
