The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) announced a new health initiative today to help ensure our athletes are fighting fit for competition
The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) announced a new health initiative today to help ensure our athletes are fighting fit for competition at the Beijing 2008 Olympics.
Mr Craig Phillips, Secretary-General, AOC, announced an agreement with GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) to provide travel vaccinations free of charge for potential Olympic team members.
“A key goal for the AOC is to create a performance driven, athlete focused Team environment. By partnering with GSK we are helping to ensure that the health and well being of our athletes is protected so that they can achieve their Olympic dreams,” said Mr Phillips.
“As our athletes prepare for Beijing they will be encouraged to speak with their team doctors and/ or section managers for travel health advice and to discuss any vaccination requirements. This will be an important part of each athletes’ preparations to prevent any ill health that could detract from their successes at the Games,” said Dr Peter Baquie, Medical Director for the 2008 Olympic Team.
Mr Alex Gosman, Director of Corporate and Government Affairs, GlaxoSmithKline confirmed that under this agreement all potential Olympic team members will be offered travel and routine vaccinations if required.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends that each traveller has an individual risk assessment with their doctor prior to departure.
For China there is a risk of hepatitis A, hepatitis B and typhoid infection so immunisations against these should be among those vaccinations considered.
“It is important that all people planning a trip overseas – whether it’s a visit to Beijing for the Olympics or a beach holiday in South East Asia – visit their doctor at least 6-8 weeks before departure to ensure that they get the best travel health advice and protect themselves against unnecessary diseases when travelling,” said Mr Gosman.
The Travel Health Advisory Group (THAG) reminds travellers that although we would rather not think about getting sick while in some exotic location, a recent survey has shown that two in 10 Australians have had to seek medical treatment overseas.
2006 World Champion gymnast Philippe Rizzo agrees and said ensuring his vaccinations are up to date is an important part of helping to ensure he is fit and healthy for competition.
“On two occasions in the past, I have had to compete whilst suffering from an illness. The last thing you need after years of dedication and training is preventable illness during competition. I will be taking all necessary precautions in the lead up to Beijing to make sure that I can perform at my best,” said Rizzo.
