Australian biathlete Cameron Morton has finished in 78th place in the second World Cup of the season in Hochfilzen, Austria.

Morton missed three targets in the individual 20km race, finishing 6 minutes 58.6 behind race winner Raphael Poiree of France.

The placing was the third best World Cup result of Morton's career, and reflects the extended training he has been able to do in the northern hemisphere this year after taking leave from his regular job.

Australian team-mate Mark Raymond placed 118th. 17 minute 15.8 seconds behind after an indifferent day on the shooting range where he missed six targets

Morton and Raymond will both line up in the sprint event on Sunday morning AEST.

Morton and Raymond qualified a single spot in the Torino 2006 field by their 26th place finish out of 44 in the Nations' Cup standings last season.
