TENNIS: Sam Groth’s US Open campaign has come to an end at the hands of Tommy Robredo.
The 26th seed was far too stready for Groth, posting a 6-4 7-6(3) 6-4 victory on Court 5.
Groth’s serve, normally such a potent weapon, produced just seven aces across three sets as the Spanish veteran expertly read his delivery.
The Aussie also finished the match with more than triple the unforced error tally and winning just half of his 64 net approaches.
Robredo moves through to a third-round meeting with Frenchman Benoit Paire.
Groth’s defeat leaves three Aussies – Lleyton Hewitt, Bernard Tomic and Sam Stosur – remaining in the tournament.
