ATHLETICS: Most people her age haven’t even heard of it, but Alex Hulley is already an accomplished athlete in the hammer throw.
In her first appearance in the Australian team, the 15-year-old will compete in the women’s hammer throw at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival (AYOF).
“My close friends get what it is because I talk about it all the time, but the rest of them don’t really get it. I’ve shown them all on YouTube at least,” Hulley said.
Hulley is relishing the chance to take on her international competitors in her hometown in front of friends and family.
“There are more experienced throwers competing here and such a different variety in the competition,” she said.
With a personal best of 64.27m, Hulley is aiming for a throw of 65m at the AYOF.
Having given up netball this year to train four times a week for hammer throw, Alex is looking towards the World Youth Championships in Ukraine in July.
“I’ve thrown two qualifiers and now I just have to win the Australian Nationals in Perth in March,” she said.
“I’m just really looking forward to competing against all the other girls, and making some new friends out there.”
Women’s hammer throw will take place on the second day of athletics competition, Saturday 19 January.
