The 20-year-old from Canberra finished 25th overall behind world under 23 champion Julie Bresset, who led from start to finish to take the gold medal ahead of Beijing champion Sabine Spitz of Germany, in a time of 1min.30.52 seconds over the 28.2km.
“I didn’t have any expectations here and no idea what to expect,” Henderson said. “Just being here was the biggest achievement of my life.
“I’m happy with how I raced; I gave it everything I had and wherever I finished, that’s fine.
“This is only the beginning for me. From a coach’s perspective, it was a huge learning experience getting a feel for the Olympics.
“My real goal is the coming Commonwealth Games and then Rio Olympics.
“I’ll really have stepped it up by then and I’ll be further up the field.”
