Sixteen-year-old Melbourne schoolgirl Georgia Nanscawen will become one of the youngest ever Hockeyroos when they play their first international matches since the Beijing Olympics.

Midfielder Nanscawen was surprised to find herself among six fresh faces in coach Frank Murray's new-look Hockeyroos squad chosen for the Spar Cup, a four-nations invitational tournament also involving India, Argentina and South Africa in Durban, from June 2-6.

"I thought it was going to be at least a couple of years away before I would be in consideration for the national squad," said Nanscawen, who was playing for the Australian under-15s just 12 months ago.

"I thought I may have been a chance for the development or junior squad but it has just come so quickly.

"To be honest, I don't really know what to expect.

"This will be my first trip overseas for hockey and you see the Hockeyroos play on TV so to actually be a part of it will be very exciting."

Nanscawen will turn 17 on May 27 and, while very young, she is not setting a record.

Former captains Marian Aylmore and Sharon Buchanan both debuted while still 16. Other debutants in Murray's squad for the South Africa trip are Alison Bruce (NSW), Emily Hurtz (NSW), Stacia Joseph (Vic), Heather Langham (NT) and Danielle Schubach (Vic).

Hockeyroos squad: Nicole Arrold (ACT), Teneal Attard (Qld), Madonna Blyth (Qld), Alison Bruce (NSW), Toni Cronk (NSW), Casey Eastham (NSW), Emily Halliday (WA), Kate Hollywood (NSW), Emily Hurtz (NSW), Fiona Johnson (NSW), Stacia Joseph (VIC), Heather Langham (NT), Rachael Lynch (Vic), Kobie McGurk (WA), Hope Munro (WA), Georgia Nanscawen (Vic), Sarah O'Connor (VIC), Megan Rivers (NSW), Danielle Schubach (VIC), Kim Walker (WA).
