Just one month until Lillehammer 2016
With just one month to go until the Lillehammer Winter 2016 Youth Olympic Games kick off the Australian Team is finalising preparations across the globe.

LILLEHAMMER 2016: With just one month to go until the Lillehammer Winter 2016 Youth Olympic Games kick off the Australian Team is finalising preparations across the globe.

The Aussie Team currently sits at 17 athletes, an increase of the 13 that headed to the inaugural Winter Youth Games in Innsbruck in 2012, with the final reallocation of quota spots later this week.

Eight athletes have already been selected for Australia – Madison Poole and Jake Riley (Ice Hockey – Skills Challenge), Alex Dickson and Mollie Fernandez (Snowboard Cross), Darcie Morton and Jethro Mahon (Biathlon), Julia Moore (Short Track) and Beth Slade (Luge).

The final nine athletes are expected to be selected in the coming days and will feature athletes from Cross Country Skiing (men’s and women’s), Ski Cross (men’s and women’s), Alpine Skiing (men’s and women’s), Ski Halfpipe (men), Snowboard Halfpipe (women) and Snowboard Slopestyle (women).

The majority of Australian athletes have left the sunny shores of Australia to tackle the northern winter and ensure they are in peak condition come Lillehammer with the Opening Ceremony to be held on February 12, ahead of two weeks of competition.

Biathlon youngsters Darcie Morton and Jethro Mahon have been based in Italy and recorded some positive results over the weekend. Zali Offord and Doug Crawford (Ski Cross) are also both in Europe as they prepare with the Australian Development Team while Lilly Boland and Liam Burton (Cross Country) have just departed.

Alpine athletes Louis Muhlen and Katie Parker are in Norden, California, where they attend school, and are testing themselves on some of the toughest peaks in the US. North America is also currently home for Cameron Waddell (Ski Halfpipe), who is competing in the Rev Tour, Snowboard Cross stars Alex Dickson and Mollie Fernandez and halfpipe young gun Emily Arthur (who got the stamp of approval from Torah Bright here>>>).

The rest of Australia’s contingent are finalising preparations on Australian shores before heading over to acclimatise to the freezing conditions that await in Lillehammer.

The 17 Aussies will take on 1,100 young athletes from 70 nations who will compete in 70 events. It will be a competition and education experience they will never forget.
