Kookas compare Mos ahead of Champions Trophy

Although competitiveness is natural in any sporting team, the term took on a new meaning yesterday for the Kookaburras as they put down their hockey sticks to compare moustaches as part of the Movember challenge

Although competitiveness is natural in any sporting team, the term took on a new meaning yesterday for the Kookaburras as they put down their hockey sticks to compare moustaches as part of the Movember challenge.

As is the case on the hockey pitch, some players emerged far superior than others, with 2004 Athens gold medallist Mark Knowles leading the way for the Kookaburras with a full ‘handle bar’ style mo.

Some teammates on the other hand were not as fortunate, with youngster Simon Orchard admitting his mo had a long way to go compared to some teammates.

“I think that’s half the fun, you don’t really know what sort of mo you are going to get until you are right into it. Standing next to Knowlesy, I think I might have to get some of my girlfriends mascara and thicken mine out!” said Orchard.

Knowles said he was happy to give Orchard some advice on how to work on his mo, while noting that the entire squad was delighted to support Movember.

“He certainly is a brave man going out there like that, kind of stuck in between some growth and a mo. But at the end of the day it is for a great cause so all the players were excited to get involved. It’s a bit of fun but if we can help create come awareness it makes it even more enjoyable,” said Knowles.

Both Knowles and Orchard were joined by Movember co-founder Luke Slattery yesterday in Perth.

Movember is the official charity partner for the upcoming ABN AMRO Hockey Champions Trophy tournament which will be held in Melbourne from November 28 – December 6 at the State Netball Hockey Centre.

The tournament will feature the top six men’s hockey teams in the world and will be the biggest international hockey event on the 2009 calendar.

The first weekend of the Champions Trophy (November 28-29) will be dedicated to Movember and will involve shave-offs, presentation of best mo’s in the crowd and speeches from Movember representatives.

Players are in Perth for the 2 Test Series against Spain from November 21-22. This will provide both nations with a final preparation before departing to Melbourne for what will be the biggest international hockey event onthe 2009 calendar.

While executing structures and game plans will be a focus for this series, there will no doubt be many members of the Kookaburras eager to match up against Spain given it was them who knocked the Kookaburras out of the gold medal race at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
