BOXING: When Naomi Fischer-Rasmussen makes history as the first Australian woman to box at the Olympics, she knows Layne Beachley, the world's greatest female surfer, will be cheering her on.

When Naomi Fischer-Rasmussen makes history as the first Australian woman to box at the Olympics, she knows Layne Beachley, the world's greatest female surfer, will be cheering her on.

In her role as an athlete liaison officer for the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC), Beachley flew into Belfast to spend time mentoring the 28-year-old West Australian at the team training camp on Thursday.

Fischer-Rasmussen and the 10-strong men's squad have been training there since Tuesday.

While section manager Phillip Goodes says the middleweight is in great physical shape and training well, she is entering uncharted territory as a first-time Olympian in a brand new event.

"I think that comes down to the people around her and the training that we're participating in," he told AAP.

"Layne's been really fantastic helping the motivational side of things and just giving a good insight into what to expect."

As one of four athlete liaison officers, the seven-time surfing world champion was hand-picked by the AOC to share her insights into handling high-pressure sporting events and eliminating distractions.

Goodes says she has been a fantastic support for Fischer-Rasmussen, attending some training sessions and helping with her mental game.

"It is certainly new territory and Naomi, I think, will excel when she gets in there and gets her head right," he said.

"That's the same with all the athletes. Their physical preparation's really fantastic, so I guess it's all about mental preparation now and fine tuning."

In addition to Beachley, the boxer has the support of Goodes, her three coaches and her male team-mates.

"There's plenty of support there, plenty of motivation," he said.

"I watched her training session and it's the first time I've seen her for some time and I was very impressed by the improvement she's made in her training preparation and I thought she was quite outstanding and looking very very sharp."
