GOLF: It’s rare to be disappointed with a round of 68 at a major tournament. Unless, of course, you double-bogey the final hole.
In the blink of an eye, a superb third-round performance from Minjee Lee was tarnished by a mini disaster on the 18th hole at the Evian Championship.
An hour earlier, Lee was soaring after a four-hole birdie streak, entrenched in the top-10 and contending for her first major title.
But on the 18th Lee challenged a tight pin position by the lake, and found the water on her approach.
Lee took the same risk with her chip from the drop zone, this time landing safely and leaving three feet to secure a 67.
But as Lee missed her bogey putt, the commentator exclaimed something that possibly mirrored Lee’s thoughts – “Oh no, after all of that hard work!”
That hard work saw the West Australian go from nine shots back to within striking distance of the leaders. After two straight bogeys on the second and third holes, Lee birdied six, nine, 12, 13, 14 and 15.
Lee finished the round tied for tenth and five back of leader Mi Hyang Lee. Just a month after finishing T9 at the British Open, Minjee Lee is still a great chance to secure her second straight top-10 major finish this year.
New Zealand prodigy Lydia Ko is two back of the lead and challenging for her first major title.
Australia’s Karrie Webb showed moments of brilliance with five birdies in her 1-under round, moving up to T35 at 2-over par, while Sarah Kemp went the other way sitting T65 after her third round of 74.
UPDATE:
New Zealand's Lydia Ko wrote another chapter of golfing history on Sunday when she became the youngest winner of a women's major with a stunning final round 63.
In the final round Lee (72) was tied for 11th, 12 shots behind the leader while Karrie Webb (72) was 19 shots back tied for 38th.
