Male gymnasts last-ditch Olympic bid

Australia's male gymnasts will make a last-ditch bid for an Olympic berth when they take part in the London 2012 test event starting next week.

Australia's male gymnasts will make a last-ditch bid for an Olympic berth when they take part in the London 2012 test event starting next week.

While the women secured a team's berth at the 2012 Games with a top eight placing at this year's world championships, the men have been left to fight for spots in the individual all-around.

Queenslander Thomas Pichler and South Australian Sam Offord left for London on Monday, and will be taking part in a week-long training camp before the test event at the O2 Arena starting on January 7.

They will be amongst 40 gymnasts taking part, all striving to make the yet to be determined cut-off - which is expected to be between the top 20-25 placings.

Should both make the cut-off, Gymnastics Australia will select one of the competitors to go to London.

Pichler dominated last month's selection trial for the London test event, finishing first in five of the six apparatus.

The dual Commonwealth Games gold medallist looms as Australia's best hope of securing a start in the men's program at the Olympics.

Female gymnasts Georgia Simpson and Emily Little will compete in the women's all-around at the test event, which will provide valuable experience for the pair at the London 2012 venue.

Little made it through to the all-around final at this year's world championships, and along with superstar Lauren Mitchell, is seen as a vital cog in the women's team heading to the Games.

Simpson missed the world championships due to an injury setback, and the London event will be a crucial part of her bid to fight her way into the Olympic team, which will be determined after the national championships in May.

Blake Gaudry needs a top five finish at the test event to guarantee a spot in the trampoline event at the London Games, but he is likely to get an Olympic start anyhow courtesy of an Oceania wildcard.
