1996 Olympic gold medallist Russell Mark (VIC) has finished in a tie for fourth in the final of the men’s double trap at the ISSF World Cup at the Sydney International Shooting Centre.

1996 Olympic gold medallist Russell Mark (VIC) has finished in a tie for fourth in the final of the men’s double trap at the ISSF World Cup at the Sydney International Shooting Centre.

Under gloomy skies Mark hit 41 targets in the final to finish five targets behind 2000 Sydney Olympic champion Richard Faulds (GBR), who shot an overall score of 188, including 47 in the final. Current world number one Joshua Richmond (USA) claimed the silver medal on 186, while Italian Francesco Daniello won the bronze medal on 184 targets.

Mark’s fourth place finish left him an agonising one target off third place Daniello, who claimed one of the two 2012 London Olympic Games quota places on offer. Richmond has previously claimed a quota place for the USA, while Faulds secured the other quota for Great Britain with his victory.

Fellow Australian Craig Trembath (VIC) finished sixth in the final on an overall score of 179, after earlier in the afternoon progressing after a four way shoot-off for the remaining two spots.

Despite Mark and Trembath just falling short of winning quotas for Australia at this event, they still have two World Cups, the World Championships and the Oceania Championships to seal quotas for Australia for next year.

Providing that Australia wins quota places (a maximum of two) in the men’s double trap for the 2012 London Olympic Games, Australian International Shooting Limited will then nominate its athletes to the Australian Olympic Committee in the early part of 2012, with selections to be based off national rankings and recent performances.

Mark is currently ranked number one in the men’s double trap in Australia, with Trembath holding down the number two position in the rankings.

Mark has been to five Olympic Games as an athlete and in addition to the gold medal he won at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, he won a silver medal four years later in Sydney.
