Five-time Olympian Russell Mark has finished in a tie for seventh in yesterday's men’s double trap at the London World Cup event.

Five-time Olympian Russell Mark (Hoppers Crossing, VIC) has finished in a tie for seventh in yesterday's men’s double trap at the London World Cup event.

Competitors were greeted with more cold and rainy conditions at the Royal Artillery Barracks in Woolwich, but Mark showed good composure throughout to come within just one target of qualifying for the final.

The 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games gold medallist shot rounds of 45, 47 and 46 to compile an overall score of 138 and finish tied with three other shooters at the venue that will host the 2012 London Olympic Games.

Mark, who has now met the performance requirements for nomination to the Australian Olympic Committee, said the conditions had been a battle for all the competitors.

“To miss the final by just one target is always a bitter pill to swallow but the best 30 or 40 in the world shot here today and it shows I am not far off where I want to be,” Mark said.

“I can’t remember the last time I shot in the rain. I was trying to remember before and I don’t think I have in the last ten years, but the conditions were the same for everyone.

“I think here that you have to prepare yourself potentially for the same thing in July.”

Earlier in the day 2008 Beijing Olympic Games bronze medallist Warren Potent (Sydney, NSW) produced a strong display in the elimination round of the men’s 50m prone rifle to qualify for the next stage of competition.

Potent, who was Australia’s only shooting medallist in Beijing, recorded a score of 595 from 600 over his 60 shots leaving him in sixth position in his relay.

The top eight athletes in tomorrow’s 50 person qualification round will qualify for the final that will be held later in the afternoon.

Fellow Australian athlete Ashley Adams (Blackall, QLD) shot a score of 586 to miss out on qualification, but became Australia’s first Paralympic athlete to compete at an able-bodied World Cup.

Adams later this year will contest the 2012 London Paralympic Games and will of benefitted from the hit out on the temporary range.
