Mark McNee has been the best of the Australian team in the opening event of the World Cup Short Track season in Harbin, China.

McNee won his preliminary round of the 500m, then finished third in his heat to miss qualifying for the semifinal round, but was placed 18th overall.

None of the three OWI competitors made it through their opening heats of the 1000m or the 1500m, Lachlan Hay producing the best placing in the 1500m with 21st.

The relay team was also disqualified in their opening heat of the 5000m relay, which was won by Korea.

Stars of the World Cup opener were US skater Apolo Anton Ohno, who won the 500m and 1500m, and Korea's Hyun-Soo Ahn, who took gold in the 1000m and the 3000m.

The second event in the series will be held in Beijing next weekend (Oct 29-31).
