Following the conclusion of the round robin hockey games at the Sydney Olympic Park Hockey Centre this afternoon the make-up of the medal games tomorrow have been finalised.

In the third women’s game of the day, New Zealand defeated Great Britain 3-1 but it wasn’t enough to secure a place in the gold medal race.

At half time, New Zealand where up 3-1 and were showing potential of achieving their aim. Amid wild cheer from the kiwi supporters, the teams returned to the pitch but unfortunately neither could deliver in the second half and the score remained.

While today’s defeat marked the first win for the girls in black, their mood was grey when they walked from the field. The kiwis, requiring a five point goal lead to secure a birth in the final round against Australia, will move on to play China for bronze tomorrow.

In the men’s hockey, Great Britain nudged out Malaysia to win their place in the gold medal game.

Malaysia were the first to score, with Baljit Sengh Sarjab Singh hitting a goal in the 46th minute.

Moments later, British star Ashley Jackson equalled the score with a great stroke that raised everyone’s hopes, and put the gold medal game in sight.

In the 57th minute, Jackson sealed Great Britain’s win with a penalty corner, bringing the score to 2-1.

Tomorrow, Great Britain will play Australia in the women’s final and Great Britain will play Australia in the men’s final.
