Melbourne, Australia will be the centre of excitement as it celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the 1956 Olympic Games, 18-22 November 2006.
With 67 Nations participating in what was known as the ‘Friendly Games’, a re-enactment of the Opening Ceremony at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) will be the showpiece in a week of planned activities celebrating the progression and achievements of Melbourne and the athletes that participated.
The re-enactment which will be a public celebration, will honour representatives of the Australian 1956 Team as well as the contingent of International 1956 Olympians who choose to come to Australia to help celebrate the event.
To celebrate further, all 1956 Olympians will be invited to participate in an Olympians Club dinner and International 1956 Olympians will be made welcome to Melbourne at receptions hosted by National Sporting Federations and Ethnic Communities.
The Countries that attended the Games have been invited to get involved with the celebrations with many of them assisting the Organising Committee to contact 1956 Olympians to inform them of the details. Some Countries’ Olympic Committees have already committed to sending a delegation to represent them in the celebrations.
