COMM GAMES GYMNASTICS: Women's Artistic gymnast Larrissa Miller (VIC) has finished second in the uneven bars final on the eighth day of competition at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Scoring 14.566, Miller's world-class ability on uneven bars was on show. Executing multiple release elements and improving on her score from the qualification competition, Miller was thrilled to add to the silver medal she won in the team final.
Georgia-Rose Brown (VIC), Australia's second representative in the uneven bars final, displayed the elegant lines she is known for and cleanly executed her dismount to finish in fifth position with a score of 13.566.
Naoya Tsukahara (QLD) was Australia's sole representative during the first day of the men's artistic gymnastics apparatus finals and narrowly missed out on a medal on rings. Scoring 14.700 to finish in fourth place, Tsukahara, 37, exhibited outstanding strength and control throughout his routine and was just 0.066 behind Scotland's Daniel Purvis who finished in third.
Earlier in the day, Brown also contested the vault final finishing in seventh position having performed two very clean vaults for a score of 13.833.
England continued their impressive performance in the artistic gymnastics competition, adding a further three gold medals to their total.
The Apparatus finals continue tonight and are set to feature the women's beam and floor finals as well as the men's parallel bars competition.
Women snatch team silver and a fighting fourth for the men - 30 July
COMM GAMES GYMNASTICS: Australia's women's artistic gymnastics team has won silver at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Finishing with a final team score of 161.646 to England (167.555), Georgia-Rose Brown (VIC) and Olivia Vivian (WA) will also progress through to the all around final on day three of competition.
"Our women's team has really come together under the guidance of national coach Peggy Liddick and performed in a way that showcased their abilities at their best, worthy of a medal," said Gymnastics Australia CEO Mark Rendell.
"We're very proud of the team and all they have achieved in Glasgow, and we look forward to seeing them do well in the all around and apparatus finals in coming days."
Earlier in the day, Australia's men's artistic gymnastics team finished fourth in the team final with a score of 246.941.
In his Commonwealth Games debut, Kent Pieterse finished fourth overall on vault with a score of 13.733.
Thirty-seven-year-old Naoya Tsukahara (QLD), Luke Wadsworth (VIC) and Sean O'Hara (VIC) will progress to the men's all around finals.
"The men's team also performed extremely well, still managing to pull off an outstanding finish in fourth position in the team event even after we lost key athletes to injury," said Mr Rendell.
"The team got off to a great start and we look forward to seeing them continue their strong performances in the individual finals."
Women in artistic medal contention - 29 July
COMM GAMES GYMNASTICS: Australia's Women's Artistic Gymnastics team is in second place of the Team Final, and Victoria's Georgia-Rose Brown leads the All-Around competition, after the first day (Day 5) of qualification at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Australia's Women's Team hit eight from eight routines and are the only country to hit all four routines on Uneven Bars. With two strong apparatus to come, the Women's team is in contention for a team medal.
The team opened with outstanding Uneven Bar routines which resulted in Larrissa Miller in second position with a score of 14.433 to England's Rebecca Downie (14.683), followed closely by Georgia-Rose Brown in third (14.083). Both now qualify for the final. Olivia Vivian also performed well, finishing fourth (13.800) and Mary-Anne Monckton in seventh (13.333). Only two athletes per nation qualify for the apparatus finals.
Australia was the only team in which every gymnast scored over 8.00 for execution on the apparatus.
Brown continued to dominate the competition with an overall score of 13.849 for Vault which saw her qualify sixth for the apparatus and lead the All-Around competition.
The Women’s Artistic Gymnastics competition continues on Day 6 with Australia competing on Floor and Beam, from 2.45am AEST (watch live on Glasgow 6 on TenPlay).
After a strong start to the team performance on day one of competition, Australia's Men's Artistic Gymnastics team is in fifth place in the Team Final, competing on Floor, Rings and Pommel Horse.
Naoya Tsukahara and Luke Wadsworth are in ninth and 10th place respectively in the All-Around competition with best performances from Tsukahara including qualifying eighth on Rings (14.308) due to the two-per-country rule.
The Men’s competition continues also on Day 6 with Australia competing on High Bar, Parallel Bars and Vault.
