COMM GAMES GYMNASTICS: Mary-Anne Monckton and Lauren Mitchell have finished second in the beam and floor finals respectively at Glasgow 2014.

COMM GAMES GYMNASTICS: Women's artistic gymnasts Mary-Anne Monckton (VIC) and Lauren Mitchell (WA) have finished second in the beam and floor finals respectively on the ninth day of competition at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Having overcome career threatening injuries, Monckton's focus and determination was on full display throughout her routine. Known for her strong work on beam, Monckton scored 13.666 to take home her second silver medal of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Mitchell, the 2010 floor world champion, returned to international competition for the first time since the London Olympic Games earlier this year and continues to lead the Australian team. Scoring 13.833, Mitchell combined strong tumbling with elegant choreography to bring her personal Commonwealth Games career medal tally to seven.

Mitchell also contested the beam final, performing a solid routine however unfortunately fell from the apparatus to finish in sixth position with a score of 13.000.

Australia was also represented in all three men's apparatus finals on the last day of gymnastics competition at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. Kent Pieterse (VIC) contested the men's vault final finishing in fourth position having performed two very clean vaults for a score of 14.099. Visibly thrilled with his performance, Pieterse capitalised on his opportunity to compete at the Commonwealth Games and only narrowly missed out on a medal.

Naoya Tsukahara (QLD) and Luke Wadsworth (VIC) competed in the parallel bars final. A world championship medallist on this apparatus, Tsukahara finished in fifth position with a score of 14.133. Wadsworth recorded a score of 12.400 to place seventh and will no doubt build on the experience he has gained at the Commonwealth Games.

The men's horizontal bar final provided a spectacular conclusion to the competition. Australia's Sean O'Hara (VIC) was the first to compete, performing an excellent dismount to score 12.700 and finish in seventh position. Returning for his third apparatus final of the event, Tsukahara displayed poise and control throughout his routine to once again finish in fifth with a score of 14.066.

Australia's artistic gymnasts will now turn their attention to the World Championships in October which are the first step in the qualification process for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
