Australian boxer Monique Suraci is “heartbroken” after losing her opening fight of the Paris Olympics.
Monique was beaten by Colombian Ingrit Lorena Valencia in their round of 16 bout of the women’s 50kg division at the North Paris Arena.
The two-time national champion and Pacific Games gold medallist said it was difficult for her to accept that her dream of a medal was gone.
“I’m very disappointed in the way I performed and I know I’m capable of doing a lot better,” Monique said.
“I know I was capable of medalling so it’s heartbreaking for me, it’s been my only dream for a very long time so having that ripped from you is pretty devastating but I have no one to blame but myself.
“I’m just heartbroken.”
The 23-year-old said the occasion of making her Olympic debut may have impacted her ability to perform on the day.
“It wasn’t my preparation, my preparation was exactly where it needed to be, probably just with the execution she’s a great boxer and I won’t ever take that away from her,” she said.
“But maybe the atmosphere and such a big stage, and performing in front of so many people and my family.”
