Australia’s speed skating athletes continue to set new Australian records, Daniel Greig re-claiming a new 500m mark and Sophie Muir lowering her national record times in both the 500m and 1000m in a CanAm Cup event in Calgary over the weekend.
Muir has now broken into the 38 second region with a 38.99 in the 500m, while in the 1k event she has skated a 1:18.40, both easily under the Olympic qualifying times.
Greig squeaked under his previous pb in the 500m by just 0.02 seconds, but the time of 37.76 was enough to snatch the Australian best from Ben Southee.
He also skated his second fastest (and Australia's second fastest) 1000m with a 1:11:74.
Back in Europe, Josh Lose was the only Aussie representative in Hamar for the World Cup, getting his first shot at the 1500m due to Southee unfortunately being ill.
He duly delivered a pb with 1:50:60, beating the time he set at altitude in Calgary earlier this year, and also finished in 39th place, (including both A and B division), the best result overall for the men in the World Cups so far.
The next World Cup event will be held in Calgary from December 4-6.
