AOC Secretary-General Craig Phillips said the Athlete’s Commission plays an important part in the strategic planning of the Australian Olympic Committee.
“The Athletes’ Commission provides a voice for athletes across the sports,” Phillips said.“The 8 new member of the Commission will now join the 2 Winter Olympians, Paul Murray and Jenny Owens in electing a Chair and Deputy Chair who will both become full voting members of the Executive of the AOC.
“We are delighted with the calibre of the people chosen by the athletes to represent them, and the AOC Executive looks forward to working with the Commission to ensure the needs of the athletes are always central to our decision making.“The Commission is involved in all parts of the preparation of an Olympics campaign. In London, the Opening Ceremony outfit which honoured the Australian Olympic champions of the past was something discussed and endorsed by the Athletes’ Commission,” Phillips said.
Pole vaulter Steve Hooker said it was a tremendous honour to be elected, and he is looking forward to getting to work. “To be asked to represent the athletes is something that is quite humbling, especially when you consider the exceptional credentials of the nominees,” Hooker said.
“The Athlete’s Commission is a great sign from the AOC that the views of the athletes are important, and along with the other elected members, I look forward to getting to work.”
