Olympic gold medallists Nikki Hudson, Scott Brennan and David Crawshay will chat with secondary school students about sport and life as part of the Australian Olympic Committee’s (AOC) Talk to a Champ program.
The Olympic champions join AOC President John Coates and the Federal Minister for Sport Mark Arbib on international Olympic Day, Thursday 23 June at St Clare’s College in Griffith.
“Talk to a Champ provides a great opportunity to share with Australian teenagers some of the highs and lows of competition at an elite level,” rowing champion Scott Brennan said.
“My rowing partner, David Crawshay and I had a disappointing campaign in Athens, however it was that performance that drove us to win gold at the Beijing Olympics.
“Being able to turn adversity around is a good message for younger people to hear for their own sporting careers.”
Talk to a Champ is a one hour discussion forum and centres on the Australian Olympic Team’s values. The program includes multimedia highlights and finishes with a question and answer time in which Coates and Arbib will join the Olympic champions.
Brennan and Crawshay have previously participated in the program and found the students were interested in learning how elite athletes deal with pressure.
“We received a lot of questions last time about combining sport and academic pursuits,” Brennan said. “The students were eager to learn for themselves how to best manage school and sport.”
Talk to a Champ tours around the country during the year and at each event features outstanding Olympians, who share with aspiring athletes the positive impact sport has had on their lives.
The program is just one part of the a.s.p.i.r.e. school network, the AOC’s education program, which uses the Olympic sport traditions and values to teach life values and life skills.
The program also features the online multimedia events Chat to a Champ and Learn from a Champ and in the lead up to the London Olympic Games the popular Village Art program, Cheer for a Champ and lesson plans for primary and secondary school teachers.
