It was nine years ago when Olympic hockey legend, Eric Pearce (1956, 60, 64, 68) initiated the marvellous idea of an annual Christmas Luncheon at the Royal Perth Golf Club for the Olympians Club of WA (OCWA).
And so, in keeping with the now “tradition” spanning almost a decade, the 9th Annual OCWA Christmas Luncheon was held on Sunday 11 December at the Royal Perth Golf Club.
The Club has great links with the Olympic movement in Perth with many hockey Olympians also members of this prestigious Club.
There was a fabulous turn-out of Olympians, with representatives from every Games from 1948 – 2004, except 1952, across 10 sports.
As usual our rowing representatives were out in force, attendees including Colin Douglas-Smith (1948), Kevin McMahon (1956), and members of the 1960 Eight (Max Cunningham, Berry Durston, Max Gamble, John Rosser and Terry Scook).
Hockey was also well represented with attendees from seven Olympic Games, together with a large contingent from athletics from 1956.
Special thanks are extended to OCWA President Tim Willoughby (rowing, 1980, 1984) for presiding over the afternoon’s formal proceedings.
Tim’s Olympic knowledge provided the foundation for the “Olympic Quizzes and Prizes” which accompanied a wonderful three-course traditional Christmas fare.
A toast was made to Olympism, Citius Altius, Fortius and absent friends. Notably several associate members attended having been team support staff for archery, rowing, hockey and swimming.
Another great Olympians gathering with partners full of fun, fellowship and camaraderie. We wish you all a safe and Merry Christmas and of course – a very Happy New Year!
Special thanks to May Murphy and the Royal Perth Golf Club for so generously hosting our annual Christmas Luncheon.
