The Opals are hoping to settle in for a long Olympic campaign with a strong performance against their first opponent, Nigeria, in Lille on Monday.
They are fresh off a training camp in Spain, where Australia’s six WNBA players linked up with captain Tess Madgen and the five other members of the squad that flew in from Australia.
Since their team was selected in early July, Tokyo 2020 Olympian Bec Allen withdrew from the squad with injury, with head coach Sandy Brondello replacing her with Amy Atwell, who will make her Olympic debut.
“Amy Atwell has been part of this Olympic squad all year and with us in Spain for our practice matches,” Sandy said.

“This group has a really strong bond and connection and we will lock in, stay focused and continue our preparation for game one against Nigeria."
Nigeria, ranked 12th in the world, is competing in women's Olympic basketball for the third time, after two previous appearances at Athens 2004 and Tokyo 2020.
Winning two of their three Olympic pool matches would put the Opals in a strong position to qualify for the quarter-finals.
At the last World Cup in 2022 the Opals finished with the bronze medal in front of their home fans in Sydney, and eight players from that squad will once again line up in Paris.
If the Opals advance beyond the quarter-finals, they would qualify for the semi-finals for the first time since London 2012 when Lauren Jackson last competed at the Olympics.
Watch the Opals take on Nigeria at Pierre Mauroy Stadium from 7pm AEST on Monday 29 July on 9Now.
