FREESTYLE – SKI CROSS: Three-time Olympian Jenny Owens has called it a day on her skiing career after more than two decades at the top.
The 35-year-old skied her last race in the quarter-finals of the Ski Cross competition at Rosa Khutor Extreme Park on Friday, coming 12th overall.
“That’s it,” she declared at the end of her run, to some of the Australian media who have followed her throughout her long career.
“That was really, really fun. I had a great time. Not the result that I was actually looking for but I gave it everything and I had a lot of fun.”
Owens said she spoke to her sports psychologist last night, who told her to go out and have fun in her last competition.
“I’m pretty happy with how my career’s ended,” she said, reflecting on a life that’s seen her cross from Alpine events into Freestyle.
The Sydneysider made her Olympic debut at the Salt Lake City 2002 Olympic Winter Games, competing in the Super-G, Super Combined, Giant Slalom and Downhill, with her best result being ninth in the Super Combined.
In 2003, she retired from Alpine skiing due to a lack of funding and worked full-time for 18 months before deciding to continue her skiing career.
She made the switch to Ski Cross when it became an Olympic sport at the Vancouver 2010 Games, finishing 13th.
Winning bronze at the 2012 Winter X Games in Aspen, achieving four World Cup podium finishes and coming fifth at the 2011 World Championships in Park City are some of her most memorable sporting achievements.
As for the future, Owens says she’s going to finish her Sports Studies degree through the University of New England, then see what comes her way in the sporting industry.
“I think I have a lot to offer after 22 years, three Olympics and I don’t know how many World Champs,” she said.
