OWI scholarship holder Ben Mates has won the national halfpipe title at the Fructis Freeride Snowboard Nationals.
OWI scholarship holder Ben Mates has won the national halfpipe title at the Fructis Freeride Snowboard Nationals. The 19-year-old Perisher Blue rider defeated Ben Bright, with Mitchell Allan taking the bronze medal.
Allan, who only turned 15 two weeks before the championships, has been added to the OWI team.
Absent from the men’s field because they were competing in the opening World Cup of the 2004 season in Chile were two of Australia’s best riders, OWI team members Andrew Burton and Marcus Wehrle.
The women’s event was won by Laura Williams ahead of Kym Cragolini and Emily Watson.
Missing from the women’s field was OWI member Frances Miller, out of action with a knee injury, fellow Institute member Holly Crawford, who was competing in Chile, and Torah Bright, who was also taking part in the South American event.
