BOXING: Perth teenager Caitlin Parker is one step closer to the Rio Olympics after beating Commonwealth Games representative Kaye Scott in a box-off in the women's 75kg division in Adelaide on Saturday night.
The win means Parker will represent Australia at the Asia/Oceania Olympic qualifiers next month, as well as the women's World Championships in Kazakhstan in May.
19-year-old Parker beat the more experienced Scott in the finals of the Australian Nationals in November, but had to wait until this weekend to secure the 75kg spot under the best-of-three format.
"I felt really sharp, everything I'd been working on went to plan," Parker said.
"Getting it finally over and done with is very relieving. Obviously I did feel confident but there's always that thought about not wanting anything to go wrong, about wanting everything to go as I planned.
"Now it's over I can now concentrate on the international competitions, the Asian and Oceanias and the World Championships."
Parker knows most of her opponents between now and Rio will have a lot more experience, but the Youth Olympic Games bronze medallist is ready for the challenge.
"It doesn't matter what age I am," Parker said.
"These girls have the experience, but I have the confidence, I have the speed over a lot of them. They might be used to the boxers they've been around all those years, but I'm coming into the mix now and I've got a lot to bring to the table.
"I've been to three World Championships, and medalled at two of them. I'm ready for it."
Parker's next challenge will come on Friday when she fights alongside several of her teammates at a Trans-Tasman challenge in Auckland.
