Queenslanders have ‘dug deep’ to ‘continue the tradition’ of Olympic success and raise much needed funds to send our Australian Athletes to Athens with extremely successful events being held over May and June.

‘Road to Athens – return to the birthplace’ was a fitting title for our 2004 Premiers Farewell dinner held on 21st May at the Brisbane Greek Club and Convention Centre. The Queensland Premier, Hon Peter Beattie MLA addressed our Queensland Olympians and wished them well on their journey to Athens in August.

The theme of this dinner represented the journey of the Modern Olympic Games from Athens 1896 to 2004. Special guests Natalie Cook, Steven Bradbury and Athens bound Maxine Seear formed a panel for MC Pat Welsh (Channel 7) to interview and entertained the crowd with stories of their Olympic experiences. The Australian Olympic Women’s Softball Team were also able to make a quick appearance at the dinner where they were acknowledged and Queenslander Tanya Harding spoke of the teams preparations for Athens.

Again, special thanks to our sponsors CUB, Coca Cola, Channel 7 and the Greek Club staff for helping make this dinner a very special occasion.
