The Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, has been invited to attend next year’s London Olympic Games.
The invitation was extended by the Chairman of the London Organising Committee (LOCOG) Lord Sebastian Coe during a meeting with the Prime Minister at Parliament House in Canberra on Wednesday.
Lord Coe along with AOC President John Coates, Greg Hartung, Australian Paralympic Committee President and Federal Sports Minister, Senator Mark Arbib, met with Ms Gillard who complimented London on their preparations for the 2012 Games.
Lord Coe had earlier briefed athletes, business executives and politicians on plans for the London Games at a breakfast where he said he wanted London to have a party atmosphere like Sydney did in 2000.
Fifty Heads of State attended the Opening Ceremony of the Beijing Olympics in 2008 including the then Australian PM, Kevin Rudd.
Lord Coe said he would be delighted if Ms Gillard could join him for the Opening Ceremony in London on 27 July 2012.
