In 2000, Rechelle Hawkes won an historic third Olympic gold medal as part of the Hockeyroos before retiring from professional hockey.

Ten years on from the Games, she still believes that nothing compared to Sydney 2000.

“It certainly was the most memorable Games,” Hawkes said.

“From an organisational point of view, the volunteers made it. The weather was perfect, the crowds were huge - the Australian public were there filling seats no matter what the sport and I think this really is an important part of the Olympic spirit.”

At the Opening Ceremony, Hawkes took the Olympic Oath on behalf of all competitors. It was an honour bestowed on the four-time Olympian that placed her in rarefied company. The last Australian to read the Oath was John Landy in Melbourne 1956.

“To compete at home and read the Oath made it without doubt the best Olympics I’ve been involved in,” Hawkes said.

“The Australian Team performed so well. Athletes were performing above expectations and there was a great atmosphere and vibe around the camp. We won a record number of medals. It was very fitting.”

Australia won a total of 58 medals in Sydney: 16 gold, 25 silver and 17 bronze. The anniversary at Sydney Olympic Park on September 15 will provide an opportunity for the Australian Team to relive these moments.

“I think it’s just a great way to remember and reflect on those events in 2000 and for many to return to Sydney. Once the Games are over many athletes return to what is known as ‘normal life’.” Hawkes said.

The Hockeyroos defeated Argentina 3-1 in the final to give them a third gold medal in four Olympiads. Hawkes joined Dawn Fraser and Andrew Hoy as the only Australians to have won three gold medals at three separate Olympics.

Off the hockey pitch, Hawkes also enjoyed other aspects of the Games.

“The Olympic Village was great. It’s always good fun to get to mingle with other Australian athletes and those from overseas. One of the most interesting parts of Olympic Village life is the food hall because so many fascinating people are there, often people who have been your idols.”

Hawkes has vivid memories of cheering on the men’s hockey team to bronze, the women’s basketball team to silver, and dashing off the pitch to see Cathy Freeman’s 400m race on the big screen in the Overflow.

Hawkes is now the proud mother of two children - a seven-year-old boy and 5 year old girl. She proudly claims they are both enjoying playing Minkey (junior hockey).

Hawkes also continues to work with hockey, coaching a division one women’s team in Perth, and working for Perth Glory.
