Tokyo 2020 - Sailing Day 1

After a tricky day yesterday, Australia’s Matt Wearn is hoping to produce two strong races when he takes to the water in the Laser fleet today.

The Perth sailor will be the first Australian in action out at the Enoshima Yacht Harbour on Monday, after his second race was called off yesterday due to light and shifting winds.

Wearn finished his first day of competition in 17th position – and has nine more races to go before knowing if he’s qualified for the all-important Medal Race.

Fellow Australian Mara Stransky will also be back out on the water this afternoon, when the Laser Radial fleet continues their campaign. Stransky says she wants to improve on her strategic decision-making over the next two races, after finishing her first day of competition in 21st position.

‘I made a few mistakes early on in Race 2 but I know what I did wrong, so hopefully I can improve on that,’ she said.

The two athletes are part of our 13-strong Sailing team, with Australia qualifying boats in eight of the ten Olympic classes.
