The Australian Sailing Team picked up another Tokyo 2020 quota spot and three medals across Nacra17, 49er and Laser in their respective world championships over the weekend.
It was a Tokyo 2020 quota spot for brothers Sam and Will Phillips in the 49er and two silvers and a bronze in Nacra 17 and Laser for Australia's sailors.
Soon-to-be Tokyo 2020 debutante Matt Wearn won silver at the 2020 Laser Menās Standard World Championships at Sandringham Yacht Club, his third World Championship silver.
The final day of racing proved tough for the Australian Sailing Team and squad athletes, with three races in an Easterly 18 to 22 knots.
āIt was another three races in some shifty conditions,ā Wearn said after finishing twelve points behind new World Champion, German Philipp Buhl.
āIām a little bit disappointed not to be on the top step but Philipp clearly outsailed me this week. This regatta sets us up well for Tokyo. Weāll go home and sort a few things out and iron out the creases to be ready and fighting for the Olympics in five months.ā
Defending World Champion and Rio Olympic gold medallist Tom Burton finished the regatta in 15th.
āI didnāt sail my best at the start of the week,ā Burton said.
āI sailed a bit better in Gold Fleet. I always seemed to find myself on the wrong side of the course. It was pretty tough, and they were conditions I didnāt want for the preparation I did.ā
In the 49er class, brothers Sam and Will Phillips earned a Tokyo 2020 quota spot for Australia.
With winners New Zealand already securing a quota place at the 2018 World Championships, the Phillips brothersā fifth-place finish ensured their quota as the top eligible Oceania finishers.
Over at the Nacra 17 World Championships, Aussies dominated the podium with the brother and sister duo of Nathan and Haylee Outteridge claiming silver, and cousins Jason Waterhouse and Lisa Darmanin, bronze.
It was a tight race, with the Outteridge duo missing out on victory by just one point.
āIt has been a really good week for us. Today is a bit of disappointing end to it, especially as we had that lead. To lose the Worlds by the one point is tough," Nathan said.
"At the end of the day if you donāt get the result you want, then it hurts. Despite that, it was fun to sail at the kind of level we did. I know we stepped it up to what was needed, and just could not close it out.ā
Once back ashore, bronze medallist Lisa Darmanin said she was proud of her team for picking up another medal.
"It was a pretty tough week at Geelong. We sailed well today to give us a shot at taking out the gold," she said.
We are pretty happy and pretty proud of our two bronzes at two consecutive World Championships. We have really developed as a team, and I think weāre working better than we ever have.ā
