The Aussie Sharks men’s water polo team let two games slip at the FINA World League Super Finals in Athens in the past two days.

The Sharks bowed to Greece 14-12 after being level late in the final period and then today they valiantly went down to World and World Cup champion Serbia & Montenegro 12-10 after leading with five minutes remaining.

In their first game of the Super Finals they lost to Spain 7-5. By finishing fifth in the six-team Super Finals, Australia must now play the United States of America for a shot at the bronze-medal final.

SCG and Spain have already qualified for the final while France and Greece will play in the other cross-over game to see who will contest the bronze medal.

Head coach David Neesham was speechless at the final-quarter implosion against SCG, saying “I believed we could win but we made too many mistakes in the last period.”

The Sharks led 4-3, 7-5 and 10-8 at the breaks but could not contain the colossal and ultra-experienced SCG in the final phase.

Against Greece yesterday, the Sharks were a goal behind at the quarter but level at 7-all by halftime. It was 9-all at the final break but the Sharks had to play catch-up in the final period, failing with late attempts.
