TORCH RELAY: As the first snow fell in Sochi over the weekend, the Olympic Flame travelled all the way to the North Pole.
At the end of September, the Flame was lit in the traditional ceremony in ancient Olympia, and after its initial journey through Greece, arrived into the Russian capital of Moscow on 6 October, amid much pomp and ceremony. After touching down at Moscow’s VIP airport Vnukovo-3, the Flame was whisked to the city’s famous Red Square where it was received by President Vladimir Putin who oversaw the official cauldron lighting.
Despite some early troubles with the Flame going out as its Torchbearer passed through a Kremlin gate, the Torch Relay officially got underway.
The Relay, which is set to be the longest in the history of the Olympic Winter Games, has since left Moscow and travelled through the surrounding areas known as the ‘Golden Ring’ of historical cities over the past two weeks.
History was made yesterday, as the Flame travelled for the first time to the North Pole. Transported there by a nuclear-powered icebreaker, reaching the North Pole was no mean feat and Russian authorities were pleased with its smooth arrival.
"In spite of everything the flame burned excellently," Head of the Sochi 2014 Organising Committee Dmitry Chernyshenko said on Twitter. "The weather's warm, just -15 [degrees]."
The Relay will travel to St. Petersburg and then on to the Far East of Russia, the Kamchatka Peninsula, Vladivostok and back across Siberia including Lake Baikal, the world’s largest freshwater lake.
On 9 November, the Torch will again make history, as it will be taken into deep space by cosmonauts of the Russian Federal Space Agency.
During the Relay, 14,000 torchbearers will carry the Torch through 2,900 settlements of 83 regions of the country. The Relay will end with the Olympic Winter Games Opening Ceremony in Sochi on February 7, 2014.
