Australia’s first ever 3x3 Basketball Team at an Olympic Games finished the tournament in fifth place, showcasing the significant development they’ve undergone over the past few years.
Competing in the women’s tournament the ‘Gangurrus’, which is an Indigenous word for grey kangaroo, created a style of play and culture for Paris 2024 around their identity.
“It’s all about fighting outsiders, staying together and protecting the mob,” Gangurrus player Marena Whittle said.
“We like to play fast, we like to play physical and stick together.
“I hope everyone can see the team chemistry and the place with which we play. We have some good grit and true Aussie spirit.”
The team of Alex ‘Ally’ Wilson, Anneli Maley, Lauren Mansfield and Marena won four of their seven pool games, including wins against the gold and bronze medal nations from the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
They finished fifth in group play and were eliminated by Canada in the ‘play-in’ knockout stage 21-10.
