SAILING: With two Olympic medals already in the books, Australia remain well in contention to claim two more medals from the water at Guanabara Bay.
As Ashley Stoddart (9th) and Jake Lilley (8th) wrapped up their debut Olympic campaigns, Australia’s men’s 49er and 470 crews put in a solid day of racing to ensure they will be in the fight for the medals.
London 2012 gold medallists Iain Jensen and Nathan Outerridge sit in third but made significant ground on second placed Germany after three strong results.
The duo finished second in the opening race of the day before two sevenths ensured they gained 12 points on the Germans and now sit three points off silver heading into the medal race.
Great Britain are a further ten points behind in fourth while New Zealand wrapped up the gold medal prior to the final race.
In the 470 Mathew Belcher and Will Ryan finished in 7th, 1st and 7th in their three races and are now guaranteed at least the bronze medal.
The Aussies sit 13 points off competition leader Croatia and just two points off Greece for silver.
In the laser women’s radial event Olympic debutant Ashley Stoddart finished equal second in the medal race to finish the regatta in 9th overall as Marit Bouwmeester took top step on the podium.
Jake Lilley, who slipped into the medal race after another boat protested yesterday, claimed eighth in the men’s Finn.
Lilley finished fifth in the medal race as Giles Scott of Great Britain won gold.
