TABLE TENNIS: William Henzell was again the star of the Australian table tennis campaign, advancing to the third round for the second consecutive Olympics.
Henzell defeated the highly-ranked Hungary’s Adam Pattantyus and Joao Monteiro of Portugal in his opening two matches before going down to top 10 ranked Belarusian Vladimir Samsonov in seven games 10-12, 11-8, 13-11, 9-11, 9-11, 11-8, 7-11.
"I just focused on every point of every match, that is what I did well throughout,” Henzell said.
“To play like this I focused on the Olympics for 18 months. But I'm not retiring; I am looking to put in a similar performance in Rio in 2016."
Teammate Justin Han won his opening match against Togo’s Mawussi Agbetoglo before succumbing to Noshad Alamiyan of Iran.
Australia’s women competitors, Miao Miao and Jian Fang-Lay, both progressed to the second round before bowing out. Lay defeated Brazil’s Ugia Silva before going down to Xue LI of France, with Miao lost to Yi-Hua Yiang from Chinese Taipei after winning her opening match against Dana Hadacova from the Czech Republic in six sets.
In the team event, Australia went down in the opening round of both the men’s and women’s competition. Germany was too good in the women’s event, while Singapore was too good in the men’s tournament.
