The Australian Institute of Sport has named the athletes to participate in the women's skeleton, AIS Sport Science Research Project, aiming to put an Australian woman in the start gate at the Torino 2006 Winter Olympics.

The Australian Institute of Sport has named the athletes to participate in the women's skeleton, AIS Sport Science Research Project, aiming to put an Australian woman in the start gate at the Torino 2006 Winter Olympics.

A ten-woman team has been named, whittled down from an original group of 73, with the focus on athletes who could achieve explosive start times over a 30m sprint.

The women have a range of sporting backgrounds including track and field, surf lifesaving and waterskiing,

They are being coached by Terry Holland, assistant coach with the successful US 2002 Olympic skeleton team, and a former World Cup and World Championship medalist as a competitor.

The team will head to North America in November for on-ice training and competition.

The team is:

Nicole Apps
Age: 28 years
• Ranked within the top 10 in Australia since 2000 for the 100m sprint.
• Competes on the Australian Grand Prix circuit.

Melissa Breasley
Age: 25 years
• Competed in an array of sports including track and field, surf club beach sprint (consistently top 8 In Australia and achieved a 5th place at the World Championships in 1998). netbalI, rugby union, short triathlon
• Competed in the city to surf, Stawell Gift and Rialto Stair Climb

Brigette Egan
Age: 28 years
• National level sprinter
• Top 8 in the Telstra A Series in the 100m sprint.

Bindee Goon-Chew
Age 29 years
• placed 4th at the 2004 Olympic trials in the 100m and 3rd in the 200m
• Competed internationally since 1990.

Melissa Hoar
Age: 21 years
• Currently ranked No 1 in Australia for open women’s beach sprint and flags (2004),
• 2003 and 2004 World Champion in open women’s beach flags

Jessica Knox
Age: 26 years
• Currently ranked 5th in Australia for the 100m sprint
• Represented Australia at the World University Games in the 4x100m.

Emma Lincoln-Smith
Age: 18 years
• Came 3rd at the Australian Surf Lifesaving Championships in the U19 beach sprint 2004
• Strong surfing background.

Bronwyn Magdulski
Age: 31
• Competes in many track and field events and is ranked 4th in the ACT for the 100m.
• Competed in array of other sports including, karate, tennis, golf, archery, ice-skating. cricket, skiing, cycling

Emma Sheers
Age: 29 years
• Been a member of the Australian Water-ski Team since 1993.
• Has won 4 Gold medals at World Championships and is the current Slalom and Jump World Champion.
• Has been a 5 times World Record Holder in the Jump event

Michelle Steele
Age: 18
• Placed 4th at the Asutralian Surf Lifesaving Championships in the open women’s beach flags 2004.
• Queensland State Champion in the open and U19 beach flag events
• Competed up to level 9 in gymnastics.
