With our skeleton and short track athletes already into their World Cup campaigns, this week sees the opening events in snowboard cross and mogul skiing.
AIS athletes competing this week include:
Snowboard Cross
With a mixed bag of fortunes in day one of the 2010/2011 snowboard cross World Cup first round in Lech, Austria, Australia’s Alex “Chumpy” Pullin heads into day two of competition with the knowledge that his newly found extra speed can create the podium opportunities he is hoping for.
After a promising qualifying run this morning that saw him seeded third, his strong showing quickly unraveled when he crashed out of the first round.
Pullin, who finished last season as the second ranked World Cup snowboard cross athlete, will have the chance to regroup tomorrow morning Australian time.
Skeleton
AIS scholarship holder Emma Lincoln-Smith heads to Park City in the United States looking to capitalise on a strong start to her World Cup campaign.
The 25-year-old from Narrabeen goes into the third round of the World Cup with two top ten finishes to her credit this season. While consistency has followed her and enabled her to sit in a creditable ninth overall position, she is pinning her hopes on results that mirror her training times.
Fellow slider Lucy Chaffer, currently ranked in 12th position, will also compete at Park City.
Mogul Skiing
Olympic gold and silver medalist, Dale Begg-Smith, will start his World Cup campaign this weekend in the Finnish resort of Ruka.
With four World Cup titles to his name and the honor of being Australia's greatest Winter Olympic athlete, AIS athlete Begg-Smith is eyeing a possible fifth World Cup title this season, which would move him ahead of the legendary Edgar Grospiron to become unquestionably the greatest moguls skier ever.
Short Track Speed Skating
With seven years on Australia’s national team despite being just 24-years-old, Lachlan Hay knows exactly what he needs to do to move up the World Cup rankings.
Going into the second round in Shanghai, China, with a tenth placing recorded in the season opener in Changchun, China, on December 5, the West Melbourne based athlete is hoping to back up his strong start to the season.
