Thirty-seven years after his Olympic debut, equestrian rider Andrew Hoy will make history at Tokyo 2020, as Australia’s first eight-time Olympian!
The three-time Olympic Champion grew up in Culcairn, NSW and started riding as a six-year-old. He first realised he had potential in the sport after he beat Australian equestrian legend and five-time Olympian Bill Roycroft at one of his first senior novice competitions at the age of 17.
As a 21-year-old, he qualified for an Olympic debut at Moscow 1980, however he had to wait another four years before he made his debut in Los Angeles, after the Equestrian Team was one of many teams to boycott the Russian Games.
On this week’s episode of the #TokyoTogether podcast, presented by Optus and hosted by fellow Australian Olympian David Culbert, the 62-year-old relives his incredible Olympic career spanning almost four decades, including his experience as Flag Bearer at Atlanta 1996.
He shares how his sport has changed over the years, what has kept him competitively in the sport for so long, and the bond he shares with his horse, Vassily De Lassos.
With an incredible support team around him, Hoy and De Lassos are about to embark on their journey to the Japanese capital, and Hoy shares his dreams for his eighth Olympic appearance.
