In Episode 4 of Tokyo Unleashed, Olympian David Culbert chats with Rio 2016 shooting Olympian, and current Trap World #3, James Willett.
At only 20 years of age, Willet was one of the youngest shooters at the Rio Games, when he sailed through the Men’s Double Trap rounds into the bronze-medal shoot off, eventually finishing fifth on debut against shooters more than twice his age.
The Mulwala, NSW local was forced to change shooting disciplines in 2017 when the Double Trap was taken off the Olympic Programme. However, since the move to the Men’s Trap and new Mixed Team Trap event, Willett has thrived, winning an individual gold and bronze medal, plus a mixed team gold with Rio 2016 teammate Laetisha Scanlan during the 2019 World Cup season.
Willett and Scanlan also combined to win Mixed Team Trap gold in a shoot-off at the 2019 Shotgun World Championships in Lonato del Garda, Italy in July.
In this week’s podcast, Willett opens up about growing up on the family farm in rural NSW, how he first got involved in the sport, how he built his own Trap range on the farm and how he’s made the change from Double Trap to Trap with a second Olympic Games on the horizon at Tokyo 2020.
