USA avenges Torino loss – through to final.

A Monique Lamoureux hat-trick helped the US women’s Ice Hockey team to a 9-1 victory over Sweden.

A Monique Lamoureux hat-trick helped the US women’s Ice Hockey team to a 9-1 victory over Sweden.

The Swedes were completely outclassed by their more experienced rivals and struggled to find consistency in their offence.

The USA were relieved to get this game over and done with. In the Torino 2006 semi-finals, they lost to Sweden in a penalty shootout.

The USA launched themselves to 2-0 early in the first period, just as they did in Torino. However, unlike four years ago, the Swedes had no answer to the American’s creativity on the ice.

"We've talked about when you get the opportunity, to be ready. Today was a big hurdle to get across,” said USA coach Mark Johnson.

After outscoring their first four opponents by a combined 40-2, the Americans will face the winner of Finland and competition favourites Canada. A game that the US team have been preparing themselves for since the team was announced in 2009.

The consensus in the US camp is that Canada will cruise past Finland.

“Once we leave the rink today it doesn’t matter what we just did. We’re focusing on Thursday [the gold medal game] and Canada and being ready for that” Lamoureux said.

“I can’t wait. I don’t care if they’re not cheering for me.

“We feel we have yet to play our best game and hopefully that comes on Thursday.”
