The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) has paid tribute to veteran sportswriter Ian Heads who has passed away aged 81.
A prolific author, journalist and historian, Ian Heads was best known as a rugby league writer, however he had a strong connection with the Olympic movement over his career.
He was a senior volunteer on the AOC’s media team for Sydney 2000 and Beijing 2008, where he managed the AOC team based out of the Main Press Centre.
In more recent years, Ian chaired the panel which judged entries in the Harry Gordon Memorial Award for journalism at Olympic Games.
IOC Vice President John Coates says it’s a sad day for sports journalism.
“Ian was an outstanding writer and the most decent of men. He gave his time and skills to the Olympic movement generously. He was widely respected across sport and journalism. Our condolences to Ian’s family."
