GAMES: On Sunday in Rio de Janeiro the Olympic Village was officially opened but it was not the celebration that the Rio 2016 organisers, International Olympic Committee or National Olympic Committees were expecting.
With NOCs working around the clock this week to get their buildings ready for the first athletes to arrive, several countries Including Australia and New Zealand, have deemed their buildings unfit for athletes to reside in. (Statement from Australian Team)
The IOC and Rio 2016 have been addressing these issues as a matter of urgency after being brought to their attention at the start of the week. They have asked for understanding from national olympic committees and their athletes with the following statement.
"As we reached the final stretch of preparations to welcome the athletes to the Olympic Village, it became clear that as the rooms started to be used that in all of the buildings some of the rooms required extra work. Crews have worked overnight and will be working 24 hours a day until the issues are resolved.
"Unfortunately, we expect this to take another few days. Athletes that are arriving in the Village and whose accommodation is not finished will be placed in the best available accommodation in other buildings. We will be working hard to ensure that the on-going works do not disturb their preparations for the Games – preparations that will be taking place in fully checked top quality training venues. We regret any inconvenience that this may cause and we greatly appreciate the understanding of the National Olympic Committees at this time.”
