With Beijing fast approaching (4th – 20th February 2022), we are once again inviting school children from across the nation to create artwork that will inspire our athletes as they compete in the Winter Olympic Games.
The origins of this long-standing tradition of decorating the wall of the Australian quarters of the Olympic Village with artwork from Australian school children is somewhat lost but it’s been connecting our athletes to home for generations.
The tradition is about more than sport, it not only connects our athletes with thousands of children but for some, it reminds them of where their journey began. The first moment they learnt about the Olympics Games or heard about the Olympic spirit.
Olympian and ski cross athlete Sami Kennedy-Sim reflected on her experiences with Village Art and the emotion of seeing artwork from across the country.
“Walking into Team Australia House in the Olympic Village and seeing artworks from kids across the country is so special. It really makes the athletes and staff feel like they are part of something really big,” said Kennedy-Sim.
“Seeing kind wishes and images of a child’s interpretation of an Olympics makes me feel more connected to my community when I’m geographically so far away. Knowing they are proud of us makes me proud to represent them.”

For many school children it’s the first time they learn that all the nations of the world come together in a peaceful celebration of sport. Village Art can create their first connection to an athlete and help them to become part of that athlete’s journey through drawing and learning about their story.
Students of all ages are welcome to be part of Village Art, follow our athletes and have their artwork displayed on the walls of the Beijing 2022 Olympic Village.
Ms Bec Walker Year 4 Teacher from Jasper Road Public School spoke about working with the AOCs online resources and creating the artwork with the children.
“Having previously participated in the Village Art program, I know the resources and lesson plans are super helpful and easy to follow.
“It really connects our kids to the Games, helps them to learn more about the athletes and the different sports and provides a source of real positivity which is something I think we all need right now.”
Submissions for Village Art close on Friday, 10 December 2021 and for more information or to access our classroom resources click below.
