BOXING: Commonwealth Games gold medallist, Shelley Watts, will be Australia’s only female boxer at the Rio Olympics, after Victoria’s Kristy Harris was beaten in the second round of the 51kg division at the women’s boxing World Championships in Kazakhstan.

Harris was beaten in a unanimous points decision by Russian second seed, Elena Saveleva. 24 hours earlier Australia’s other Olympic hope, Perth’s Caitlin Parker, lost a close first round bout in the 75kg division.

The Olympic qualification campaign of Western Australia’s Caitlin Parker also ended after a tight second round loss.

Parker, who was hoping for a top four finish in the 75kg division to earn a spot in Rio, was beaten in a split decision by local boxer and eighth seed, Violetta Knyazeva.

ACT boxer Bianca Elmir was unlucky to lose her opening bout to India’s Nikit Zareen in the 54kg division, with two judges awarding a tie and the third giving the fight to Zareen.

There are only three weight divisions for women at the Olympics, with Watts qualified to box in the 60kg division.

Australia’s only other boxer in action at the World Championships overnight was Melbourne’s Lauren Camilleri, who lost a close points decision to Sweden’s Lise Sandebjer in the 48kg division.

Four Australian boxers are still in the tournament, after the NSW’s pair of Anja Stridsman and Jessica Messina, and Queensland’s Skye Nicolson, all had wins in their opening bouts on Friday night.

Commonwealth Games squad member, Kaye Scott, will have her first bout of the competition in the 81kg division on Sunday night.
