BOXING: Boxing Australia's High Performance Women's team has won a Gold and Bronze at the Queens Cup in Stralsund, Germany.
Shelley Watts won the Gold medal early Sunday morning (Australia time), defeating Welshwoman Rosie Eccles on an unanimous decision.
She had to win 4 bouts to take gold, also defeating Aleksandra Talaga (Poland) by split decision in the Preliminaries, Martina Schmoranzova (Czech Republic) in the Quarter-Finals and Elena Ustinova (Russia) in the Semi-Final bout.
It was Watts' first international tournament since the 2014 AIBA Women's World Championships, and gives her a good lead into the 2016 Elite Australian Championships on the Gold Coast later this month.
Caitlin Parker won Bronze in the 75kg division. Parker defeated two Russians on back-to-back nights to win her way through to the Semi-Finals, besting Lyubov Pashina and Saadat Abdulayeva.
Abdulayeva won the Russian National 69kg title earlier this year, while Pashina is the current 81kg National Champion. She was unable to get past England's Savannah Marshall, who won 3:0.
Kaye Scott also competed in the 75kg division, but was unable to advance past the Preliminaries after drawing hometown German Sarah Scheurich and going down 0:2.
The team was led by Head Coach Kevin Smith and Assistant Coach Shara Romer.
