There were more medals in the pool and world records broken by Aussie Olympians this weekend, along with some impressive top-ten finishes for volleyball, golf and cycling.
Australia’s swimmers continued to dominate at the Jinan World Cup, as Mitch Larkin collected his third gold medal of the meet in the men’s 100m Backstroke. Larkin completed the trifecta with a 200m Backstroke and 200m Individual Medley gold from earlier in the week.
Cate Campbell who won gold in the women’s 50m Butterfly returned to the pool to take out the 100m Freestyle, winning the race and breaking her own World Cup record with a time of 52.34.
Emily Seebohm took out her pet event, the women’s 200m Backstroke while also claiming silver in the 100m Backstroke and bronze in the 50m Backstroke and teammate Thomas Fraser-Holmes won gold in the men’s 400m Individual Medley along with bronze in the men’s 400m Freestyle.
Tristan Jason won silver in the men’s 200m Backstroke, while Holly Barratt also claimed silver in the women’s 50m Butterfly and Maddi Gough found bronze in the women’s 800m Freestyle
Grant Irvine won the men’s 200m Butterfly before Larkin, Fraser-Holmes, Seebohm and Campbell teamed up to take gold in the mixed 4x100m Freestyle Relay.
On the green, golfer Minjee Lee earned herself a top-ten finish at the Ladies Scottish Open, placing sixth in tournament, while the Australian men’s Volleyroos competed in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Bari.
The Aussies went down 2-3 to Rio 2016 silver medallists, Italy and 1-3 to Serbia before claiming a win over Cameroon, 3-0.
Only the top six teams will qualify for Tokyo 2020 through the tournament, but the Aussie men have another chance to qualify for Tokyo at the Asian Championships in January 2020, where a top 8 finish will guarantee qualification.
The UCI Mountain Bike World Cup continued at Lenzerheide, with dual-Olympian Rebecca McConnell finishing 6th in both Cross Country and Short Track. She is now sitting at fifth on the World Cup series ladder, with one more round remaining.
Australia’s tennis stars also had a strong start to their Cincinnati Masters campaign, with Alex De Minaur advancing to the second round and Astra Sharma qualifying for the main draw.
